Existing Active Chilled Beam Systems

Warm room air rising through a ceiling grille by natural convection and then through a chilled beam coil where it is cooled and induced back into the room by the negative pressure caused by the velocity of the air being introduced into the room via the fresh air duct nozzles.

One of the problems with this system is, that as the room temperature and humidity increases, condensation can form on the coil and then drip from the coil through the grille and into the room below.

The only way to avoid this is to increase the temperature of the water passing through the coil, which in turn reduces the cooling capacity of the chilled beam. (Just when the customer needs it most!)

Another disadvantage is to get adequate cooling the coil has to be 2 to 3m long which is sometimes difficult for an Architect to fit with his ceiling layout. Quartz have, by turning the coil through 90°, (i.e. turning it on its side) and then bending it into a square shape greatly reduced the space needed in the ceiling grid for the same cooling output.

Also, by turning the coil on its side, a drip tray channel facilitates the  collection and removal of any condensate produced by the coil sweating, thus removing the necessity of reducing the cooling capacity of the cooling coil as temperature and humidity increase. It is this condensate removal that we feel may be possible to patent.

Quartz Active Chilled Beam Cassette System (CBC)

The Chilled Beam Cassette, originally introduced at the CIBSE/ASHRAE Conference in Edinburgh in 2003 under the Marstair Airking brand, was changed to the Quartz Chilled Beam Cassette when Marstair took over Quartz at the beginning of 2005. The fascia on the left is the standard cassette fascia common to both the Quartz chilled water cassettes and the Marstair DX cassettes. The fascia on the right is one of the architecturally aesthetic options. There is no reason why the client or architect cannot choose and indeed devise a fascia to integrate with the false ceiling manufacturer. Quartz would be pleased to assist with this. Further developments have now taken place for a four pipe heating and cooling version and, in conjunction with Thorn, a version with lighting is also available.

The principle of operation is simple. Primary air fed into a plenum chamber is discharged through an arrangement of strategically placed nozzles. This in turn induces secondary room air through the cooling coil within the unit. Efficiencies are high, as the primary air constitutes only 25% of the total air volume, the remaining 75% volume from the resultant induced air.



The Chilled Beam Cassette also has the added advantage of being able to operate at chilled water temperatures below due point (typically chilled water less than 14C). This results in increased performance. Condensate removal is possible via the standard gravity drain feature or the optional internal pump lift.

The Quartz Chilled Beam Cassette (patent pending) combines all the proven features of our range of Chilled Water Cassettes fan coils, and the benefits of Active Chilled Beams.

Designed for rapid installation into a standard ceiling grid, the Chilled Beam Cassette utilises a one-piece structural chassis with integral wipe clean drain tray. The chassis, once removed, allows easy access to all sides of the coil for cleaning.

The duty of the CBC ranges from 400 watts with a nominal of 825 watts to a maximum of 1200 watts, suitable for the inner core of the building. Where high duties are required, on the periphery of the building, the Quartz Chilled Water Cassette can be used to provide a much greater duty. The fascias of the Chilled Beam Cassette (CBC) and the Chilled Water Cassette (CWC) can be exactly the same.

Only requirements for heating exist in the building and both outdoor units provide hot water to all coil sections, as required.

Simultaneous heat and cool

The primary heating heat pump is providing hot water and the primary cooling heat pump is supplying cold water and the respective coil sctions are activated. Zone requirements, heat pump mode, valve actuation and fan speed are all controlled automatically by the integral control system.

    Simultaneous Heat and Cool

    A cooling requirement exists in Zone 2.
    The boiler is providing hot water and the chiller is supplying cold water.
    The respective coil sections are activated to cool Zone 1 and to heat Zone 2.
    Determination of Zone requirement, valve actuation and fan speed are all monitored and controlled automatically by the integral control system.

    Zone control - Heating Mode (All outdoor units on heating)

    Stage 1 Zone temperature is >0.2°C below set point. Valve 1 would be open, utilising the 30% coil segment

    Stage 2
    Zone temperature is >0.6°C below set point. Valve 1 would be closed and Valve 2 open, utilising the 70% coil segment

    Stage 3
    Zone temperature is >1.0°C below set point. Both Valves 1 and 2 would be open, utilising the full coil segment

    Stage 4
    Zone temperature is >1.4°C below set point. Valve 1 would be open and fan speed would be switched to high.

    Zone control - Cooling Mode (All outdoor units cooling)

    In cooling mode, the system operation is identical to that for heating but activated for zone temperatures above set point. All outdoor units will be operating on coolings.

    Boost Cooling Should the zone temperature exceed 1.4°C above the set point, both valves will be open and fan will automatically switch to high speed.
